Description:

Neither Chicago nor Detroit—could the origins of house music actually lie in India!? To celebrate LIGHTINTHEATTIC’s 25th anniversary, this cult classic acid house album from Bombay in 1982—which backs up this shocking and unusual theory—is being reissued! We’re thrilled to announce that a CD version will also be released! This album is an incredibly avant-garde work by musician CHARANJIT SINGH—who was churning out soundtracks for the Indian film industry, or “Bollywood”—in which he reimagined the “raga” of Indian classical music using the latest synthesizers and disco rhythms of the time. While preserving the melodic structure of Indian classical music, it featured an almost unprecedented sound—minimalist, repetitive dance music—and reportedly received little attention at the time, partly because only a few hundred copies were pressed and it wasn’t distributed in the West. However, in later years, its signature features—the stiflingly intense four-on-the-floor beat generated by the Roland TR-808, the low-end, undulating bass from the TB-808, and the synth sounds from the Jupiter-8—whistling, wailing, and dancing seductively through the air—these quintessential acid house characteristics garnered attention. The album was reevaluated as “a work that anticipated acid house (surprisingly, more than five years before the birth of acid house (around 1987)) by more than five years,” and it has since gained a cult following worldwide. Notable fans include Radiohead and GlassBeams, who have recently sparked an “exo-psychedelic” craze around the globe (listen to their reinterpretation here: “One Ragatoa Disco Beat (A cover of ‘Raga Bhairav’ by Charanjit Singh)”) are among the global artists who have joined the ranks of its fans. With over 10,000 “Wants” listed on Discogs, the original 1982 pressing is traded for thousands of dollars—truly the Holy Grail of Holy Grails. It was also reissued in 2010 by the Dutch label Bombey Records, but prices for that version have already skyrocketed as well, putting it completely out of reach for latecomers. A reissue of this extremely rare album is exactly what all music fans have been waiting for!!
