Description:

A new work by Sichedrin, created as Gergiev's 60th birthday present, a super-full recording SACD hybrid recording of the world premiere of the latest opera by Rodion Sichedrin, born in 1932 and composed in 2013. It was commissioned by the Mariinsky Theatre as Gergiev's 60th birthday present, and the recording of its stage premiere on July 27, 2013 is of great interest. Based on the novel "Gicho no Kaji no Kaji to no Tomi" (translated by Kentaro Ikeda, published by Tokyo Sogensha) by Nikolai Leskov (author of Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk"), this is Shchedrin's sixth opera. Unlike "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk," "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk" is a satirical comedy that humorously depicts the life of a stubborn old Russian man and the relationship between Russia and England. Among the great composers of the former Soviet Union, Shchedrin is still a firebrand. It is a miracle that the Shostakovich-like style of the old Soviet Union is still alive and well.Gergiev grew up with this kind of music, and it is no wonder that he continues to be obsessed with and devoted to Sichedrin. The Sichedrin was also Gergiev's 60th birthday present, so it was even more powerful and full of life than usual. The brilliant orchestration, the expert stage effects, the irony and pathos in the music, and the luxury of being able to enjoy the best of the Soviet musical tradition in the most up-to-date form. The Gergiev troupe also boasts an excellent lineup of singers. Andrei Popov is a tenor whose performance as Herod in Richard Strauss' "Salome" at the NHK Music Festival in 2014 is still fresh in our minds. Maria Maksakova as Princess Charlotte is another young mezzo who visited Japan last year. It is noteworthy that she is the granddaughter of Maria Maksakova, the legendary soprano who was Golovanov's favorite. Gergiev's conducting was also superb, recreating the sound of Soviet opera at its peak. King International
