Description:

Barenboim's fifth complete Beethoven piano sonata cycle recorded at the Pierre Boulez Saal in 2020 is now available on Blu-ray & DVD! Bonus footage includes an interview & master class! Three promising young pianists, Kantorov, Milstein and Müller! On the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's birth and the beginning of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Barenboim will make his fifth recording of Beethoven's complete piano sonatas in 2020. Barenboim explored Beethoven in depth from April to June 2020, recording the Diabelli Variations in a worldwide live streaming concert from the Pierre Boulez Saal in April, followed by a recording of all 32 sonatas. The complete CD has already been released, and now the complete performance recorded at the Pierre Boulez Saal will be released on Blu-ray and DVD. Barenboim has recorded Beethoven's complete sonatas five times, including the first (EMI/1966-69), second (DG/1981-84), third (EuroArts/1983-84, a video Metropolitan Municipal production), fourth (DECCA/2005), and fifth (DG/2020). Sonatas five times (DECCA/1983-84), four times (DECCA/2005), and five times (DG/2020).There have been great pianists of all time and places, but no other performer has had five recording opportunities as Barenboim. The box includes a video interview with Barenboim talking about Beethoven's piano sonatas and a master class with young pianists (with Japanese subtitles). In the interview, Barenboim shares anecdotes about his first encounter with Beethoven and his unique experience as a pianist from a young age. The master class features Alexandre Kantorov, winner at the 2019 Tchaikovsky International Competition, which he took on at age 22; Natalia Milstein, a student of Nelson Gernell; and Fabian Muller from Bonn. The students were impressive in the way they enthusiastically instructed the young promising performers, pointing out specific details of dynamics and articulation in order to connect them with the next generation of musicians.
