Description:
The "Monday Demonstrations" were held in Leipzig every Monday from 1982 to 1989. This movement started with a few hundred people, but by October 9, 1989, 70,000 people were said to have participated. They left Karl Marxplatz, chanting "Wir sind das Volk! (We are the people!), they marched through the city to protest against the East German government of the time. Miraculously, the demonstration ended peacefully without any bloodshed. Nine days later, Erich Honecker, then President of the Council of State and General Secretary of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany, was ousted from office, and the following month the Berlin Wall fell. It is well known that the conductor Kurt Masur was among the "Leipzig Six" who prepared a "peace message" broadcast over the radio during the October 9 demonstration. Three politicians, a stage actor, a pastor, and a conductor. These six men attempted to call on the citizens, who were in a feverish and volatile state, to "act calmly. At first we were supposed to roll out leaflets, but at Mazur's suggestion, we decided to call out directly from the speakers. -We are concerned about the current situation and hope to find a solution. We need a free exchange of ideas about the survival of socialism in this country. Please remain calm in order to achieve dialogue. Mazur's message captured the hearts of the citizens and brought them to a sober decision. The following week, another demonstration was held in Leipzig, with an estimated 120,000 participants, not only in Leipzig, but also in Berlin and Dresden. The 1990 performance of the Ninth by Kurt Masur, a key figure in the fall of the Berlin Wall, is no less significant than the legendary commemorative performance by Bernstein, and is a significant slice of history. This Blu-ray includes the previously released "Classical Music and the Cold War: Musicians in East Germany" as a bonus video. Naxos Japan
