Dalvalova & Starker's Kodály Duet First release of the 1986 live recording! Elmira Darvarova, the Bulgarian-born violinist who defected to the United States and became the first (and still the only) female concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, performs with the great Hungarian cellist János Starker in the 1986 Kodály Quartet. The live recording is being released for the first time. The live recording was made at the Sofia Music Week, one of Eastern Europe's leading music festivals (Bulgaria), just days before Dalvalova's daring escape behind the Iron Curtain. The two would later become concert partners, but despite the fact that it was their first time performing together at the time, they performed in harmony as if they had been longtime partners, captivating the audience with a passionate performance that got to the heart of the raw music. Also coupled on this album is János Starker's recording of Kodály's Sonata for Unaccompanied Cello, originally made in 1950.Starkel recorded the same work multiple times, but here, label producer Gene Gaudette has remastered the landmark early recordings, originally released on LP by Period Records in the US, in HD audio.
