It also charted at #37 with the single "Black Friday." The album was characterized by Becker and Fagen's initial dissatisfaction with the album's sound quality due to a problem with the then-new DBX noise reduction system. Fagen and Becker refused to listen to the finished version. This album also marks the first time singer Michael McDonald has participated on a Steely Dan album. Known for his soulful voice as a member of the Doobie Brothers, McDonald is a five-time Grammy Award winner and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020 as a member of the Doobie Brothers. The album cover features a photograph of a grasshopper, a "singing" (STRIDULATING) insect related to crickets and grasshoppers. This is a reference to the album title, and the "singing" of the grasshopper sounds as if it is saying, "Katy did, Katy did not. The lyrics of the song "Dr. Woo" include phrases like, "Katie tried, I'm half glued, Katie lies, I can see it in her eyes." The premise of the "Katie lies" theme is based on the words of Denny Diaz when he came to the studio to play on "Your Gold Teeth II. Jeff Porcaro, who was only 21 years old at the time, played drums on all the songs except "Any World (That I'm Welcome To)," which featured legendary session drummer Hal Blaine.
