Description:

Gardner & Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra! Nurheim's ballet, "The Tempest"! Arne Nurheim, a national composer who died in 2010 and was given a state funeral in Norway! The Bergen Philharmonic's Principal Conductor, Edward Gardner, has recorded the whole work! Arne Nurheim (1931-2010) was one of Norway's most important and respected composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. He used a wide range of techniques depending on his subject matter and inspiration, including works in modernist techniques, works with electronics, and works in traditional language, and he remained active in composition until his death in 2010, when he was given a state funeral in Norway. The Tempest, a ballet based on Shakespeare's play, is one of Nordheim's most famous musical compositions. Composed in collaboration with American choreographer Glenn Tetley, it was premiered in Germany in 1979 and given its Norwegian premiere at the Bergen International Festival in 1981. As far as I know, no other play in Shakespeare's oeuvre has music appear as frequently and play as large a role as The Tempest. Each character is characterized by music. Even Caliban, the enslaved man, is given a character. A recording of this work by Charles Darden and the Southwest German Radio Symphony Orchestra was released on the Norwegian Composers Society label.A new album by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and its principal conductor Edward Gardner, released by LAWO Classics, is based on a session recording of "The Tempest" performed at Bergen's Grieg Hall as part of the 2021 Bergen International Festival. "Forty years have passed since then," says Gardner. Forty years later, Arne Nurheim and Glenn Tetley's "Classics" will rule the Grieg Hall. Beate Mordahl and Jeremy Carpenter replaced the singers from the festival performance as soprano and baritone, respectively. Tokyo M-Plus
