LSO Concertmaster Nikolić Takes on Shostakovich’s Symphony SACD hybrid disc. Nikolić, who exuded a charismatic presence as concertmaster of the LSO, is a renowned violinist also known as Ibragimova’s mentor. Here, he takes on Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 14, “The Song of the Dead,” with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, where he has served as music director since 2004. The first thing that strikes the listener is the slow tempo. In particular, the slow first, fourth, ninth, and tenth movements are slower than any existing recording, conveying a profound sense of the “death” that serves as the work’s overarching theme. The Israeli soprano Gal James, who performs the solo parts, also appears on Petrenko’s Naxos recording; however, this recording was made four months earlier. She is the young singer of today who performs this work most flawlessly, delivering a magnificent performance ranging from the Maiden of the Lorelei to the formidable Madame of the sixth movement. This performance was given in 2013 by Nikolić, who was 45 at the time; he was also 45 when Rudolf Barshai gave the world premiere of this piece in 1969. Both artists—who are also renowned string players—exquisitely weave together this uncanny numerical coincidence and the orchestration featuring strings and percussion, making full use of their mastery of the strings. The high-quality recording on this SACD hybrid disc is also noteworthy.
