Joe Lovano, the greatest tenor saxophonist of our time, is back with the popular Polish trio, the Marcin Bosilewski Trio, for their second album on ECM! Building on the lyrical intensity heard on his previous album, Arctic Riff (2020), Homage explores the free-flowing interplay and expansive improvisation that Lovano has developed in his trio tapestry and elsewhere. The album was recorded in a studio session during a residency at the Village Vanguard in the late fall of 2023, and the flowing compositions are unfolding as they should. Rare expressiveness and spiritual affinity color this session, which exhibits a particularly adventurous spirit. The two full-length pieces, each over 10 minutes long, and the title track, "Homage," are all Lovano originals and form the basis of the album. Joe frequently switches between tenor saxophone and tarogato, interspersed with a variety of percussion instruments. All I hear are gongs and light percussion," Lovano says. Communication with Michal on drums is very good. In the studio, it was like we were one! says Lovano. The quartet has toured extensively since their first album, "Arctic Riff," so it was not difficult for them to rekindle their spark in the studio. Joe and I hit it off right from the start," says Lovano. It was a natural thing. He's the type of musician who jumps in at the moment and plays whatever he hears together.Touring together over the years has strengthened this connection, both on and off stage. His openness and spontaneity have made this a true musical dialogue," the trio commented.
