Description:

This 180g weight LP of the soundtrack to Louis Malle's 1958 French noir film "Elevator to the Gallows" is part of the legend that Miles Davis composed the music for the film. Rarely has a soundtrack been so definitive, and now, nearly 70 years later, this taut, feverish recording of extreme dramatic tension that transcends mythology remains one of Miles's finest works. The basic outline is as follows. Jean-Paul Rapnault suggested to Malle that he commission Miles Davis to record the soundtrack for the film, and Malle agreed to record the music after attending an informal screening. Davis had played at Club Saint Germain in Paris in November 1957, and on December 4, 1957, he brought his four sidemen to the recording studio without having them prepare anything. Davis simply handed the musicians a few rudimentary harmonic sequences he had assembled in his hotel room, and when the plot was explained, the band improvised without a pre-composed theme and an edited loop of a musically relevant movie scene was projected in the background.Bassist Pierre Michelot recalled in 1988 that "Miles just told me to improvise two chords, D minor and C7, four bars each. Typically, Miles did little planning, but he knew exactly what he wanted. The music was released on 10" on Fontana and won the Grand Prix from the Académie Charles Clos in France. In the United States, it was released on Columbia as the A-side of the 12-inch LP Jazz Track and was nominated for a 1960 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance (solo or small ensemble). This beautiful reissue of the original recording was pressed on 180g vinyl at GZ and features original liner notes by Boris Vian, an iconic studio photo of Miles and Jeanne Moreau taken by Jean-Pierre Leroy, and a book by Frank Bergerot on this It is housed in a gorgeous gatefold tip-on jacket, along with an essay on the circumstances that produced the out-of-the-ordinary music.Luxury gatefold tip-on jacket with English translation of the original liner notes and iconic photographs of Miles and Jeanne Moreau taken by Jean-Pierre Leroy. A two-page essay titled "A Present from Miles Davis to Louis Malle" is included.
