Maurizio Pollini, who won the International Chopin Piano Competition in 1960 at the age of 18, recorded Stravinsky's "Petrushka" and Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 7 for Deutsche Grammophon in 1971, a debut recording that shocked the world with its precision. Webern and Boulez, recorded in 1976, were also masterpieces that brought out the hard, clear touch of Pollini, and in particular, the performance of Boulez's Piano Sonata No. 2, in which he perfectly realized the complex score, demonstrated the true value of the work to the world.
