The long-awaited follow-up to *J.S. Bach: Cantatas* (CDA68111)—the album for which Yestyn Davies, performing with the period ensemble “Arcangelo” led by Jonathan Cohen, won the 2017 Gramophone Award—is finally here! This new release features features an exquisite program combining two cantatas believed to have been written by Bach in Leipzig for a highly talented boy alto, along with a chorale cantata by Schütz and a collection of arias by Buxtehude, showcasing Jestin Davis’s noble, intelligent, and deeply expressive vocals. The cantata BWV 169 also features a stellar lineup of soloists, including Carolyn Sampson and John Mark Ainsley. The members of Arcangelo are led by James Thorne (violin), who performs with the Ancient Chamber Orchestra, the Classical Opera Company, and the OAE, alongside Beatrice Phillips (violin), assistant concertmaster of the Welsh National Opera, Beatrice Phillips (violin), Assistant Concertmaster of the Welsh National Opera; Michael Grevich (violin) and John Croccat (viola), the newest members of the London Haydn String Quartet; and Reiko Ichise (viola da gamba), formerly a member of Florilegium and Fretwork—all up-and-coming period instrument musicians.
