Description:
A historic instrument with links to Paganini, Vuillaume and Sivori. The gifted Russian violinist Ksenia Milas plays Paganini's Op. 1 Kept under strict guard at the Palazzo Tursi in Genoa, alongside Paganini's beloved 1743 Guarneri del Gesù "Il Cannone", is a second remarkable instrument: the 1833 violin by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume known as the "Sivori". When Vuillaume was entrusted by Paganini with the repair of "Il Cannone", he took the opportunity to build a replica while the work was under way; the copy was later given by Paganini to his pupil Camillo Sivori. That instrument is now the vehicle for a special project: a recording of Paganini's 24 Caprices on the "Sivori". The violinist chosen by the city of Genoa, which administers the instrument, is Ksenia Milas, a Russian-born artist now based in Italy. She made her solo debut at the age of eight with the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and at nine won first prize at the international violin competition in Athens, establishing a reputation as a prodigy. She went on to study with the distinguished Boris Belkin at the Maastricht Conservatoire, graduating with honours in 2012. Alongside a solo career across Europe, she has since 2010 taught at the International Piano Academy in Imola at the invitation of Vladimir Ashkenazy, passing on the traditions of the Russian violin school to her students. The Swedish composer Jonathan Östlund, deeply impressed by her playing, dedicated to her his Paganini Fantasia, composed in January 2018. Milas has chosen to couple the 24 Caprices with the Four New Studies, four practice pieces recently discovered by Professor Danilo Prefumo. Paganini's world, played on a historic instrument - an issue well worth waiting for. Tokyo M-Plus
