Description:
This story takes place in the early third century, during the era of the Roman Empire when Christianity was still banned. Theodora, the daughter of the Syrian royal family, is arrested for refusing to participate in pagan rituals. The punishment imposed on her is to be “raped by Roman soldiers.” Her lover, Dideimus, a Roman official, devises a plan to sneak into her cell and help her escape, but in the end, both are sentenced to death. Although the work incorporates many elements—such as religious conflict and the spirit of self-sacrifice—that underlie the couple’s martyrdom for love, perhaps because it is, after all, an oratorio, it is consistently imbued with dignified and grand music, giving it a distinct flavor different from that of opera. Handel (1685–1759) seems to have been confident in the quality of this work, but unfortunately, the premiere was poorly received—perhaps because, in truth, the audience was expecting a happy ending.
