Description:
Johann Simon Meyer's opera "Lacademia di musica" (The School of Music) was first performed at the Teatro San Samuele in Venice in the fall of 1799. Because the work itself was short, it was combined with another composer's False Opera, and there are records that it was performed at least twice, but has since been forgotten. Nevertheless, it is an interesting work that continues the 18th century tradition of "plays within plays" and concerts held as part of the opera. The story is based on the comedy in two acts of the same name originally written by playwright Alberghati Capacelli in the 1780s, in which Guglielmo, a rich old man who does not want to give his son Valerio his fortune, seduces Vespina, a maid, to marry him, but she and Cecchino, a servant, are They are in love with each other. Meanwhile, Valerio falls in love with a beautiful Venetian girl, Annetta, and introduces her to his father as the "hostess of the academy" in order to get her permission to marry him. Guglielmo once flirts with Annetta, but in the end, he approves of the marriage between the two young couples.Here, Filippo Morace as Guglielmo sang with great strength and comic timing, giving an excellent performance as the old but thriving Guglielmo. Eleonora Bellocci, winner of the 2018 International Bel Canto Award, also delivered a charming coloratura. She wowed the audience.
