American composer Daron Alick Hagen studied with Ned Rorem at the Curtis Institute of Music and then, at the urging of Leonard Bernstein, went on to the Juilliard School, where he studied composition with David Diamond and others. He has written more than 500 works, ranging from opera to brass band music, and has received the Guggenheim, Rockefeller, and Kennedy Center Friedheim awards. This collection of songs, "Art of Song," uses words by Whitman, Sappho to Lincoln, Orson Welles, and others as texts. It is composed of four parts: "Summer," which focuses on the victims of American politics since the Civil War; "Autumn," which looks at the inner life of human beings, including aging, love, and nostalgia; "Winter," which sings of innocence lost with age and the difficulties of maintaining faith; and "Spring," which portrays young New Yorkers and the role of song through the ages.
