Matvienko’s debut album is now available, following his rapid rise to prominence since winning the 2021 Nikolai Malko International Conducting Competition. Matvienko was born in Minsk, Belarus. While studying at conservatories in St. Petersburg and Moscow, he attended masterclasses with Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Vladimir Jurowski, Theodor Currentzis, and Vasily Petrenko, and served as an assistant to Jurowski and Petrenko. His official website features a quote from Fabio Luisi: “The combination of his exceptional conducting technique and deep knowledge of the repertoire makes him an unparalleled conductor in both opera and symphony.” In June 2024, he made his Japanese debut conducting the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. He delivered an energetic and colorful performance, achieving such success that he received a solo curtain call after the concert. That same fall, he was appointed Chief Conductor of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra. For his debut album, he selected works by two composers born in Ukraine, a neighboring country to his own—works that cannot be fully expressed through dynamism or brilliant performance effects alone. Matvienko, who speaks of his earnest hope that music may serve as a refuge and source of healing that transcends borders and religions in a modern world where dark history repeats itself, has deliberately chosen works that demand profound musical expression, making this a highly anticipated release.
