Description:

Pancharevo Festival presents "The Wandering Dutchman" on the shores of the lake! The Pancharevo Festival is held on the shores of the scenic Pancharevo Lake in the suburbs of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. This is a recording of the Sofia National Opera's performance of "The Wandering Dutchman" at the festival held in the summer of 2022. The stage, built on the shore of a lake, was designed and built by Plamen Kartalov, the artistic director of the opera house, who also directed the performance, as a tribute to Barbara Hepworth, a 20th century English sculptor. Markus Markwald, who is active mainly in German opera houses, plays the title role, Radostina Nikolaeva, a native of Bulgarian Opera, plays the role of Zenta, and Alexandrina Stoyanova, an up-and-coming singer also from Bulgaria who is building an international career, gives a splendid performance as Marie. In addition, Kurt Riddle, known to old fans as "The Mega Bass," will play the role of Durrant (Kurt Riddle also teaches German to the singers in this production). The stage is set against the backdrop of a lakeside landscape that begins in the westerly sunlight and gradually fades into the dark of night. The performance will be performed by the Sofia Opera Orchestra under the direction of Kartalov. Naxos Japan
