Jean-Baptiste Lully, inspired by the new art of opera brought from Italy, opened the door to the history of French opera by establishing the form of lyric tragedy, in which a French libretto is recited with dances and solo singing to create a great tragedy. As the royal music director to the Sun King Louis XIV, he presented a series of new works for the royal court in this form, among which "Atys," premiered in 1676, was the Sun King's favorite "opera of kings" that was performed again and again for generations to come. This tragic love story of Atys, who escapes the love of the goddess Cibel and falls in love with the river nymph Sangalid, only to be turned into a tree by the wrath of the goddess, was also a decisive success for William Christie's Les Arts Florissants in the 20th century, when the Baroque opera was revived.
