Description:

Mercadante was an Italian composer known for his series of operas such as "The Robbers" and "The Priestess of Vesta". In 19th century Italy, works in genres other than opera were rarely considered, but Mercadante composed his flute quartets with his teacher Pasquale Bongiorno and Sergio Niggli, a popular performer at the time, in mind. Mercadante composed his flute quartets with Pasquale Bongiorno, his teacher, and Sergio Niggli, a popular performer at the time, in mind, and they appear to have been performed at private concerts. All of these quartets are characterized by ornate ornamentation that adorns beautiful melodies reminiscent of arias from Rossini's operas, and the E minor quartet in particular, which is believed to have been composed after 1816, has a concerto-like character in which all instruments have their own showcase. The quartet is performed by Attila Chioco Cernitori, who has an Italian father and Japanese mother, and other players who specialize in 19th century Italian music. Naxos Japan
