Description:
Szymon Laks was a Polish composer who worked in France. He was sent to Auschwitz by Nazi Germany in 1942, but miraculously survived and returned to Paris. He continued to compose music and became a writer around 1967. Weinberg, on the other hand, also from Poland, worked in Russia and became friends with Shostakovich. Weinberg was also known to have had a difficult life due to the war. Evelina Nowicka, who performs on this album, says that her great aunt's painful experience during the war made her feel a strong affinity for both composers and inspired her to dedicate her artistic activities to their works. Her "Kaddish 1944" is a psalm piece dedicated to the victims of the Lodz Ghetto, which was demolished in August 1944, and Lax's "Poem" is an arrangement for violin and chamber orchestra by Nowitzka. The work highlights the violin's virtuosity in the tradition of Ysaÿe. Weinberg's "Three Pieces," also arranged by Nowitzka, was written when he was 16 years old. Naxos Japan
