Description:

A collection of Gernsheim's string quartets by the Diogenes Quartet following the first collection (777387). The second collection includes String Quartet No. 5 and String Quintet. The fifth quartet was published by Zimrock in 1911 in parts only, without a score. The first performance was given by the Klingler String Quartet, led by Carl Klingler, then concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic. The work is rooted in the tonal tradition, with small motifs developing with chromatic harmony, characteristic of Gernsheim's later period, but with a dizzying interplay of major and minor keys, and the long-breathed melodies reminiscent of Brahms' early period are overshadowed. The String Quintet was premiered in March 1916, but was never published. Gernsheim believed that it would be his last chamber work, and although difficult, it is written in a full, rich style that seems to encompass all of his previous compositional techniques. Naxos Japan
