Benjamin Apple is a notable German baritone who is said to be Fischer-Dieskau's last disciple. He has previously released "Forbidden Fruit" (ALPHA912) and Schubert's "Winterreise" (ALPHA854) on the ALPHA label to great acclaim. On this album, Apple sang the piano accompaniment parts of Schubert's famous songs, which later composers arranged into orchestral versions. Schubert's songs have always had an intimate atmosphere, but these arrangements make them sound as good in today's huge halls and require even greater expressiveness from the singers. Apple has sung Wolff's orchestral versions of songs before (cpo 555380), and she is no stranger to orchestral versions of songs, and she meets these demands with a fine voice in this recording. The arrangements by various composers, including Reger, are also worth listening to. In between the songs, an orchestral arrangement of "German Dances" by the Austrian conductor and composer Johann Herbeck (1831-1877) is included to explore the connection between Schubert and folk music.The Munich Radio Orchestra is conducted by Oscar Joeckel, a highly acclaimed composer, who also conducts the orchestra.
