The compositions are as tightly focused as chamber music, and they bring us closer to the truth of the beauty of these vivid 18th century works! The Dunedin Consort is a Scottish old instrument ensemble that has recorded many masterpieces for Linn with their unique interpretations of Handel's and Bach's great vocal works. Their first instrumental-only recording in some time is Bach's orchestral suites, which showcase their unique and careful interpretation. Like many of Bach's ensemble works, it is believed that most of these four suites were composed in their original form when he was in the service of the Köthen court, a sect that did not use music in their worship services. The version that is widely known today was compiled in his later years, when he was busy with his work as choir director at St. Thomas' Church in Leipzig and regularly conducted concerts at the city's coffee houses. Here, the Dunedin Consort dared to use a small string orchestra similar to that of the 18th century (three violins, two violas, one viola, and two cellos and double basses each), and the players' individual talents were utilized in a flow that clearly conveyed the movements of each voice part, creating a neat and lively sound. The engineering of the LINN's natural breath is also present, and this is an outstanding performance that cannot be overlooked as a deep appreciation of Bach's music, which has been well thought out down to the smallest detail.
