In the interview book *Conversations with Philippe Herreweghe* (edited and authored by Camille de Leyk / LPH026), in which he stated, “I want to devote the time ahead to performing works that I truly feel are necessary for me.” Each new Bach recording he presents through his own label holds great significance. And indeed, this new recording of the *St. John Passion* has been crafted with such passion and dedication that it can be called the definitive interpretation of the work. Bach’s *St. John Passion* exists in various versions, with no single version that can be called the composer’s definitive edition. Herreweghe had already recorded this work for *harmoniamundifrance* in 1987 and 2001; the latter, in particular, featured Mark Padmore as the Evangelist and and caused quite a stir by adopting the unusual 1725 second version, which features the closing movement of Part 1 of the *St. Matthew Passion* at the very beginning. While this new recording appears to be based on the same version as the first one, the opening movement begins at a faster tempo than the 1987 recording, with a sound that is at times feverishly intense and utterly compelling. Combined with the unique sense of unity characteristic of Collegium Vocale Gent—born of the strong trust among the performers—an indescribably exciting Passion narrative unfolds. The Evangelist is Maximilian Schmidt, who has been appearing in a series of Herreweghe’s masterful performances in recent years.
