Description:
Federico, the son of Rosa, the farm owner, is head over heels for “a woman who says she’s from Arles.” Baldassarre, the shepherd, tells Rosa, “I have a nice girl I’d like to introduce to you,” while Federico’s childhood friend, Vivetta, secretly harbors feelings for him. However, whether he is aware of their feelings or not, Federico remains obsessed with the “woman from Arles,” who has yet to even show her face. Then Metifio arrives. He reveals that “the woman from Arles was his ex-girlfriend” and even leaves a letter as proof before departing. Shocked, Federico rushes out of the house, with Vivetta following close behind. Although Federico had once resolved to marry Vivetta, seeing Metifio reignites his passion for “The Girl from Arles.” In the end, he loses his mind and throws himself from the top of a tall tower. Although this opera is based on Daudet’s “From the Windmill,” the same source material as Bizet’s masterpiece “L’Opéra d’Arles,” the complete work is rarely performed, making this recording an exceptionally valuable one. The most famous piece in the work is the heart-wrenching aria “Federico’s Lament,” sung in Act II. This melody is also played at the curtain call, serving as the conclusion to this hopeless work. In this performance, the tenor aria “Unamattina—One Morning,” which was included in the first draft but was subsequently lost, has been restored. Please enjoy the story brought to life by Golovnin’s beautiful tenor voice, the expressive singing of the ensemble surrounding him, and the rich, full sound of the orchestra. Naxos Japan
