Glenn Gould (piano)

Description:

After the release of his Columbia debut disc, "Goldberg Variations," in 1956, Gould became a popular pianist and immersed himself in a busy performing schedule not only in Canada, but also in the United States, Europe, and the Soviet Union. The three concertos on this disc are rare live recordings of Gould's concerto performances from that period, including Beethoven's "Emperor" in Buffalo in 1960 with his trusted conductor Joseph Klips, which was only released on CD in 2010 and is the earliest performance of Gould's "Emperor. This is the earliest performance of Gould's "Emperor" on CD. The two pieces with Dimitri Mitropoulos, the Greek philosopher-conductor, include Bach's Concerto No. 1, which Gould performed around the world, and the performance on this disc, which marks his Salzburg Festival debut. The Schoenberg with the New York Philharmonic is from Mitropoulos' last period as Music Director of the Philharmonic. (C)RS
