Island of Love, Third Man London’s first signed band, has released their debut album—a loud, noisy record brimming with dynamics woven from tension and silence. A band that gets signed before they even have a chance to step outside for a cigarette after a show is undoubtedly one of the country’s top live acts. Island of Love found themselves in exactly that situation when they performed at The Blue Basement, Third Man Records’ live venue. They were the second band to play at this venue after Jack White, and since the venue had just opened, the drummer even ended up with paint on his back from playing pressed up against the wall. Thanks to this snap decision, they became the first band signed to Third Man London. IslandofLove is, in many ways, a one-of-a-kind act. They fuse a gritty guitar sound with an inherently melodic sensibility, and their sound and spirit are reminiscent of Dinosaur Jr. and Husker D? in their prime. Following the release of their 2021 EP Songs of Love, the trio wrote a vast number of songs, rehearsed with military-like discipline and dedication, entered the studio, and crafted a powerful, highly polished album. Despite being their debut album and the band still being relatively young, it exudes an extraordinary sense of restraint and thoughtfulness. While loud and noisy, the album is filled with dynamics woven from tension and silence, which in turn highlight the power and intensity of the noisier sections. The band needed an engineer who could bring out this sound. The choice fell on Jack Shirley, who has a wide-ranging track record as a producer, from Deafheaven to HappyDiving (the band that had the greatest influence on Island of Love).
