This is the fifth installment in Gabriel Feltz’s complete Mahler symphony series, which—despite mixed reviews—has consistently captivated (?) the hearts of his core fans. As usual, the booklet features detailed program notes by Feltz himself, complete with sheet music (with a Japanese translation), and his meticulous analysis of the variations in the third movement, in particular, is reflected in the performance; the transition from the fortissimo at the end of the third movement to the heavenly music of the final movement is one of the highlights of this disc. Throughout the recording, one can sense Feltz’s dedication to this work through his delicate tempo changes and the nuanced shading created by variations in dynamics. Soloist Wernecke was a member of the Krefeld/Mönchengladbach Opera from 2004 to 2010, where she won acclaim as Zerbinetta in *Ariadne auf Naxos* and and the Queen of the Night in *The Magic Flute*, and she participated in the German premiere of Cerha’s opera *The Giant of Steinfeld*. Her vocal prowess, which spans a wide repertoire from classical to contemporary, is fully on display on this disc as well. Tobu Land System
