Piano Trio by Chausson and RavelA new recording by Trio Metral, winner of the First Prize/Audience Prize/Best Performance of a Haydn Trio at the 2017 Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition, is now available. The trio was formed by an older brother, younger brother, and younger sister of the Metrall family, but now features new members on violin and cello. The program includes the famous Chausson and Ravel trios. Chausson's Piano Trio was written in 1881, when Chausson was 26 years old and had just lost the Grand Prix de Rome. It is a masterpiece full of lyrical exuberance and tinged with the shades of late Romanticism. And Ravel's only piano trio in his life (completed in 1914) was written just after the outbreak of World War I. Ravel may have been thinking that this could possibly be his swan song. The work is full of orchestral sounds and thickness, beginning with piano writing that requires a high level of technique. Trio Metral echoes it with energy and plenty of lyricism.
