In June 2019, she won the third prize at the 16th International Tchaikovsky Competition, The program is a bird's-eye view of the history of the cello, freely combining cello works from the earliest works written for unaccompanied cello in the 18th century to the present day. The works by contemporary composers were inspired by Baroque works. Many of them require superb technique, but Kovekina plays them atmospherically with a tone that is full of unique presence. The instruments she plays with are also very rich, with the castanets resonating effectively.
