Here is a remarkable new recording by Steyer and Dieltiens of the Cello Sonata and Bagatelle (solo by Steyer)! Cellist Roel Dieltiens is the founder of the Ensemble Explorations and an authority on baroque and modern music, having served on the jury of the Tchaikovsky Competition, the Leipzig Bach Competition, and other world-class competitions. Steyer is also an indisputable master of the modern age, who brilliantly sounds the fortepiano, harpsichord, and sometimes even the modern piano with his own musicality. Modern masters. This is a remarkable meeting. Both cello sonatas, Op. 102, were composed in 1815, not long after Beethoven's death. The sonatas have a strong fantastical and contemplative tone, breaking the conventional framework of sonatas. Dieltiens and Steyer create an ensemble full of fantasy. Bagatelle Op.119 was compiled between 1820 and 1822, and although each piece is short, it is surprising how much depth and variety of expression is contained in these pieces.The sense of fulfillment after listening to each piece is incredible. The op. 126, written in 1823-24 at the same time as the Ninth and the Missa solemnis, is said to be a "sketch of the (late) string quartet," a collection that seems to condense the essence of all of Beethoven's late masterpieces.
