Description:

In Iceland, the Land of Fire and Ice, the history of song is said to be the history of music. Graham Ross, conductor of the Cambridge Clare College Choir, is deeply interested in the music of this country and has collaborated closely with composers who were born in Iceland. Focusing on the music of Iceland over the past half-century, "The Land of Ice" is one of the culmination of this collaboration. The album features Thorkell Sigurbjornsson's (1938-2013) "Hear, O Heavenly Creator," composed on a 13th century poem, Atli Heimir Sveinsson's (1938- Atli Heimir Sveinsson(1938- 2019)'s "Autumn Poem to Maria," Jon Asgeirsson(1928-)'s "On a Calm, Sunny Stream," and Snorri Sigfus Birgisson(1954-)'s "Love Song," all of which are widely loved by Icelanders. The program will also feature new works by "today's" composers, as well as works that are widely loved by the Icelandic people. Anna Thorvaldsdottir's (1977-) "I Kneel" is one of the contemporary composers' "answers" to Buxtehude's "The Four Limbs of Our Jesus," a piece about the "knee. The work was composed on a poem by Gwvzulun Eva Minervdottir. Sigurdur Saevarsson's (1963-) "Magnificat," based on the text of "Mary's Hymn" (1:46-55) from the Gospel of Luke, was commissioned by Graham Ross for the Cambridge Clare College Choir, and was completed in 2016 by the choir of the Cambridge Clare College Choir. Composed, this is the first recording of his "Requiem".Tryggvi M. Baldvinsson Tryggvi M. Baldvinsson (1965-)'s "Evening Prayer," composed on a poem by the clergyman Hatlgrímur Pietursson about "Christ, the guiding light in the darkness," was sung by the Cambridge Clare College Choir in 2021 at It was sung by the Choir of Clare College Cambridge in 2021 at Hattlegrím Church. The program for this album includes two string orchestral pieces by the Dmitri Ensemble, which performed in Anna Solvaldsdottir's "I Kneel". The "Lamentations" was composed by Jon Leifs (1899-1968), Iceland's most internationally known composer, whose works include the symphony "Heroes of the Saga" (BIS 730), to mourn the death of his mother. Sigur Ros (Sigur Ros), a rock band that sings songs about the bays of the western fjords of Iceland, will perform "Frijtavík," arranged by Dmitri Ensemble violinist Guy Button. British soprano Carolyn Sampson will participate in the session. She sings the solos in "I Kneel" and "Lux aeterna" from the Requiem. King International
