Released on August 8, 1995, this landmark album—a defining work of ’90s alternative rock—returns with newly remastered audio. In addition to the original album, this definitive edition includes “Shelved First Attempt,” an early recording that has long been spoken of among fans as a “legendary, unreleased track”! In recent years, DAT tapes were rediscovered in Ben Folds’ own archives and have been newly remastered for this release. “ShelvedFirstAttempt” consists of early recordings produced by Dave “Stiff” Johnson, featuring early versions of seven tracks—including “Underground” “Philosophy,” and “Julianne,” as well as “Evaporated”—which was later re-recorded for *Whatever And Ever Amen*—and previously unreleased outtakes such as “Emaline,” “Dick Holster,” and “Eddie Walker.” The original album was recorded in just four days under the production of the late Caleb Southern. Featuring tracks like “Jackson Cannery,” “Philosophy,” and “Underground,” it is highly regarded as a historic debut album that opened up new possibilities for 1990s alternative rock with its unique, guitar-free lineup and piano-driven power pop sound.
