Queen: The World’s Greatest Rock Band 1986’s “Queen: Budapest” (vinyl), the first stadium rock concert by a Western artist held behind the “Iron Curtain” In this year of major anniversaries—the 80th anniversary of Freddie Mercury’s birth, the 55th anniversary of the band’s formation, and the 40th anniversary of the Magic Tour (the final tour featuring all four original members of Queen)—comes “QUEENBUDAPEST | Queen: Budapest,” the last live performance by Queen captured on film. “QUEENBUDAPEST” is a legendary concert film documenting the first stadium rock concert by a Western artist held on the other side of the “Iron Curtain” during the Magic Tour on July 27, 1986, amid the Cold War. This release marks not only the first official project between Sony Music Visions and Queen but also the beginning of a formal partnership between Sony Music and Queen regarding their catalog. *QUEENBUDAPEST* is being released to commemorate the 40th anniversary of this landmark performance in the band’s history. Based on the original 35mm film shot using 17 cameras, it has undergone a meticulous 4K restoration by Peter Jackson’s (director of *The Lord of the Rings* trilogy) Park Road Post Productions (New Zealand). Furthermore, the original multitrack audio has been newly remixed to deliver the most immersive live experience to date. Recorded on July 27, 1986, this concert took place at the Népszín Stadion in Budapest as part of The Magic Tour. Queen was the first Western rock band to perform behind the “Iron Curtain,” which was undergoing a period of significant cultural and political upheaval at the time. All 80,000 tickets sold out. Outside the venue, nearly 45,000 people without tickets gathered to listen to the performance. Among them were fans who had traveled from as far away as Russia and Poland. The concert was captured on 35mm film by 17 of Hungary’s leading photographers. They used 17 cameras and every available roll of film in Hungary at the time—a total of 25 miles (approximately 40 km). This project, which was realized with the full approval of the Hungarian government, was an extremely unusual undertaking for a communist country at the time. Although it was unimaginable at the time of this hugely successful concert, Queen would go on to perform only five more shows. Less than two weeks later, on August 9, 1986, the concert held at Neuburth Park in the UK marked the final performance of the tour featuring Freddie Mercury. (1/3)
