"The Dream of Gerontius" is one of Edward Elgar’s (1857–1934) three major oratorios and is also considered one of the three great British oratorios. Based not on the Bible but on a long poem by Cardinal Henry Newman, “The Dream of Gerontius” is a monumental work depicting anxiety and fear of death, as well as the salvation and purification of the soul by God and the angels; it is widely regarded as Elgar’s greatest masterpiece. This is one of the finest performances of the work, recorded by Richard Hickox—the original “evangelist of British music,” who served as chorus director of the London Symphony Chorus from 1976 to 1991—in collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra.
