Bournemouth, in southern England, on the English Channel. This collection of Britten’s orchestral works features the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra—based in this port city—and conductor Hickox. From “An Introduction to the Orchestra for Young People,” which makes the entire orchestra sound robust and skillfully captures the characteristics of each movement, to “Four Interludes on the Sea,” where the scenery evoked by this orchestra from a British port town is a delight to experience, the energy and polish of Hickox and the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra are exceptionally high across all four works on this recording. This is a superb performance that truly lives up to the reputation of the “evangelist of British music.” Tokyo M-Plus
