A deep, bizarre masterpiece born from the collision of Turkmenistan’s traditional folk music and avant-garde jazz/progressive rock sounds & masterpiece! Formed in 1979 under the direction of keyboardist Dmitry Sablin, the group won the top prize in the “Pop-Instrumental” category at the 6th All-Union Variety Artists’ Competition held that same year, which led to their debut on the state-run label Melodiya. From Turkmenistan, former Soviet Union instrumental ethno-jazz-rock group: FIRYUZA. Originally released in 1979 on the Melodiya label, their debut album—still renowned today as one of the rarest records from the former Soviet Union’s Melodiya catalog—is being reissued in 2026 as a limited-edition vinyl release! In addition to the standard lineup of keyboards, guitar, bass, and drums, the group incorporates traditional Turkmen instruments such as the plucked string instrument dutar, the Dili Tuiduk—a woodwind instrument similar to the clarinet—and the Ghijak—a three-stringed bowed instrument—this ensemble features a total of seven members, including dedicated string and wind players—all wearing the traditional Turkmenistan woolen hat known as the “terpek”—delivers a technical psychedelic jazz-rock sound that exudes an ethnic vibe just as their appearance suggests! Starting with the opening track “Ashabad”—where a driving rhythm section intertwines beautifully with melodies imbued with an Eastern European-style melancholy—the album features a robust groove born of each member’s technical prowess, breathless interplay, and the fusion of exotic Turkmen folk music—this is a must-hear album with a truly unique identity that could only have emerged from this era and this region!
