Yo-Yo Ma’s life’s work, launched in the 21st century for all people. Yo-Yo Ma, recorded in New York in August 2001. In 1998, Yo-Yo Ma founded the “Silk Road Project.” Born out of his 25 years of performing around the world, the project aims to study the knowledge and traditions of the diverse cultures along the Silk Road. It is an endeavor to deepen our understanding of the lives and cultures of people living around the world through music that touches the human soul. This album marks the first release of the Silk Road Project and features works by composers from Mongolia, China, and Azerbaijan. The Mongolian tracks generated significant buzz because Yo-Yo Ma plays the morin khuur on them. Furthermore, the “Silk Road Ensemble”—featuring Asian folk instruments such as the Chinese sheng, Chinese pipa, and Indian tabla—creates a new sonic landscape alongside Yo-Yo’s cello. Sony Music
