Schoenberg’s controversial work *Moses and Aaron*, which caused a stir at the 2009 Ruhr Music Festival. A breathtakingly authentic performance that leaves one stunned—was the music ever this full of drama? *Moses and Aaron*, Schoenberg’s life’s work, which remained unfinished. Based on the Book of Exodus in the Old Testament, it is composed using an astonishingly intricate technique: the entire work is built around a single series (tone row) using the strict twelve-tone technique. The piece is also technically demanding to perform and ensemble, and it is said that Schoenberg himself believed it would be impossible to perform without an automatic player. This production, which was staged at the Ruhr Triennale Music Festival in 2009 and caused a major sensation, is now available on DVD. The spectacular staging by renowned director Willy Decker is also a highlight; Dale Dusing, who plays Moses, is a veteran actor who portrayed the Commander in Mozart’s *Don Giovanni*, conducted by Böhm at the 1977 Salzburg Festival. In this production as well, he conveys Moses’ anguish with his seasoned acting. Although “Moses and Aaron” is often said to have been composed purely with the intellect, here it captivates the audience as a vivid, heartfelt drama in the tradition of Baroque opera.
