The Staple Singers, from Chicago, Illinois, began blending church gospel music with secular R&B in 1948. Driven by Roebuck ""Pops"" Staples' raucous, Delta-esque guitar style wrapped in eerie reverb and given a laser-like urgency by Mavis Staples' voice, their early recordings were a balance between country blues and gospel.
