In 2017, the year of the 450th anniversary of the birth of Monteverdi, the pioneer of Baroque music and a great contributor to the development of opera, Gardiner spent seven months performing his only three surviving operas, Orfeo, The Crowning of Poppea, and The Return of Ulisse, around the world. Gardiner himself said that the Polish tour of Ulisse in September was the culmination of the tour. Gardiner himself said that the performance of "Ulisse" in Poland in September was the pinnacle of the tour, and that it was a miraculous performance created by a group of busy singers working together with the most powerful chorus and orchestra. This is the best performance of Monteverdi that only Gardiner could have achieved, and it is now available on disc! Gardiner's devotion to Monteverdi is so great that he named the orchestra and chorus he founded after him (the predecessor of the English Baroque Soloists was the "Monteverdi Orchestra"). The orchestra and chorus he founded even bear his name (the English Baroque Soloists were formerly known as the "Monteverdi Orchestra").
