A love song dedicated to his beloved Goffriller, Haimovitz and Mari Kodama's upcoming joint album of French music sung with elegance! The gifted cellist Matt Haimowitz is releasing an album with the world-renowned pianist Mari Kodama! The album focuses on French composers active in the 19th and 20th centuries, and includes works by Poulenc, Fauré, Milhaud, Nadia & Lili Boulanger, Ravel, and Debussy. The title of the album, "Mon ami, mon amour" (My friend, my love), was named by Haimowitz in honor of his beloved instrument, the Goffriller. A tragic event happened to this beloved instrument in February 2017. While giving a lesson to a student in Montreal, Haimowitz lost his balance when he stood up to look at the score and threw the cello out of his grasp, causing the neck to come off. Haimovitz, who was avoiding covering himself at the moment of his fall, made the painful decision to throw his cello out instantly.About a year after the tragedy, my beloved instrument returned to my possession after repairs, and it was able to produce the same brilliant, clear, singing tone as before. The lesson he was teaching was Poulenc's cello sonata. Despite the tragedy, Haimovitz decided to record the Poulenc he was teaching there and completed the album with an all-French program. Haimowitz was joined by Mari Kodama, a highly acclaimed pianist who has made numerous recordings for the Pentatone label and other labels. The two visited Japan in June 2018 to perform a program that includes sonatas by Poulenc and Debussy, which are included on this album. Their breathtaking performance shines through.
