Furtwängler, who was banned from performing after the war on suspicion of Nazi involvement, was later acquitted and returned to his native Germany in May 1947 for the Beethoven Pro with the Berlin Philharmonic. Furthermore, in October, the month of this performance, he will return to opera performances. Furtwängler's "Tristan" is well-known for its studio recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra, but the disadvantage of a British orchestra and studio recording is still clear. Although this recording contains only the second and third acts, and even the second act is not perfect, it is an ideal recording to understand how Furtwängler, the "German conductor," performed in German opera houses. The undulating dramatics are truly the best part of listening to Furtwängler's Wagner. The sound quality is very clear and realistic for the era.
