Description:
Here is the origin of Steve Goodman, a folk legend who passed away early in life. Rarely discovered and previously unreleased recordings of his 1969 live performances, before he had a record deal, are now available on CD! Folk legend Steve Goodman introduced the folk standard "City of New Orleans," later covered by Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Judy Collins, and others. The Chicago native was a musician's musician from the late 1960s until his brief death from leukemia in 1984 at the age of only 36. Rare and previously unreleased live recordings of him before he got a record deal in 1971 have been unearthed. As the title suggests, this release, "LIVE '69," is a recording of a live performance he gave in his hometown of Chicago in 1969. In 1969, Steve Goodman was already a popular figure in his hometown of Chicago due to his outstanding songwriting and musicianship, as well as his personality and unique performance style as a performer on stage. That year, Rich Warren, a student at the University of Illinois and a folk music host himself, organized a show with Steve as the headliner.Rich Warren brought a Tandberg 64X tape, two Shure ribbon mics, an AKG 202E microphone, and a simple Shure mixer to record the show in a college auditorium. More than half a century later, in 2020, the recordings from that time have been unearthed and will see the light of day! Live '69" is a rare live album that captures Steve Goodman on the rise as a rising star of the folk scene. One of the features of this show, which took place a few years before he released "City Of New Orleans," which would later become his signature song, is that he included a great number of cover songs in his set, including standard numbers by Willie Dixon, Merle Haggard, and Bob Dylan, as well as a number of other popular folk songs. He also included a wide variety of standards, including Willie Dixon, Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan, and even a medley of songs by The Beatles and Jefferson Airplane. Rich Warren, who recorded the show and also wrote the liner notes for this album, wrote: "I've been involved in folk radio for 50 years now, and in that time I've recorded hundreds of artists live. But no one had more energy, more vibrancy, a broader repertoire, and more crowd-pleasers than Steve Goodman. This album proves that he was stealing the stage even before he delivered the hit "City Of New Orleans. Steve Goodman's "Live '60" - a rare record of American music has now been unearthed.
