Live from the Salzburg Festival in 2023. The up-and-coming French conductor Maxime Pascal and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra present Martinu's opera "The Greek Passion" on film. Based on "Christ is Crucified Again" by Nikos Kazantzakis, a leading contemporary Greek writer, poet, and thinker known for such works as "The Man Zorba," the opera was written by Martineau himself. The production is based on the version that was first performed in Zurich in 1961, after Martineau's death. The opera tells the story of the conflict between the Greeks, who live in peace despite being ruled by the Turks, and the Greek refugees who have been driven from their land. The well-known biblical passage, "Love thy neighbor. Two thousand years after the time of Jesus, the world is becoming more and more diverse, and because of information technology, it is becoming more and more apparent that the values of our neighbors are different from our own, creating intolerance among people. Director Simon Stone, who specializes in raising social issues through his operas, attempts to express the various intolerances and divisions in today's society through this production. The story takes place in a Greek mountain village ruled by the Turks. On Easter Sunday, the priest Grigoris announced the casting of the villagers for the Passion Play to be performed at Easter the following year. Villagers given roles, such as Christ, Peter, and Mary Magdalene, are asked to behave in a manner befitting their roles for a year. There, Greek refugees from villages sacked by the Turks come to the town square and ask for protection. However, the refugees are rejected by the majority of the villagers who only care about themselves. The story progresses on two fronts: the role of the refugees in the Passion Play performed in the village and the problems of the refugees actually happening in front of them. In the end, however, Manolios, the Christ who woke up to help the refugees, is killed, just as in the Passion Play. The refugees, who have lost the power to live because of Manolios' death, leave, singing words to God. (King International)
