Gianandrea Noseda, conductor Washington National Symphony Orchestra *Janay Bridges (Mezzo-soprano) (SACD Hybrid) STEREO Multi-channel This composer and his music need to be heard. His music not only says important things, it makes you think deeply about many things."-The Washington Post Carlos Simon is the Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence. Tales-A Folklore Symphony delves into African-American culture and folklore, touching on a wide range of ideas from black spirituals to comics by the Afro-futurist creative duo Black Kirby. The Block is a short study piece. It draws inspiration from the visual art of artist Romelle Bearden, whose work reflects everything from African-American inner-city life to South African life. Songs of Separation for mezzo-soprano and orchestra, commissioned by the Washington National Symphony Orchestra, was inspired by four poems by the 13th century Persian poet and Sufi Jalal al-Deen Muhammad Rumi. The work was commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, D.C. The album closes with a concerto. The piece asks the audience to reflect on their own consciousness in an increasingly chaotic society. From the liner notes (excerpts excerpted): "My father is always angry with me. He wants me to be a pastor, but I've always told him, 'Music is my pulpit, I'm here to speak.Carlos Simon," commented the Washington Post's list of "Composers and Performers to Watch in 2022." Simon, who grew up in Atlanta and draws inspiration from a long lineage of preachers and a connection to gospel music, has been nominated for a Grammy Award and has proven that a good song can truly be a sermon. His style of music ranges from concert music for large and small ensembles to film music influenced by jazz, gospel, and neo-romanticism. (King International)
