A special box set marking its 25th anniversary, with legendary Astrée-era performances restored on hybrid SACD. * To mark the 25th anniversary (in 2012) of La Capella Reial de Catalunya, the choral ensemble founded by Savall in 1987, the ALIA VOX label presents a special box set. The group, which still sings magnificently in such projects as the B minor Mass (AVDVD9896) and the label's historical narrative series, is heard here in a selection of its finest albums from the Astrée years, 1987 to 1995. All caused a considerable stir at the time and have long been deleted. Every disc has been remastered in hybrid SACD, allowing the exquisite blend of period instruments and voices to be enjoyed in outstanding sound. An anniversary edition at a highly attractive price. * The soprano of Montserrat Figueras is a major part of the appeal. Her fresh, radiant singing at the height of her powers — she died in 2011 — is captured here in full. The instrumental accompaniment is of course provided by Hespèrion XX, and the warm, supple harmonies that only period instruments can produce are a joy. * The booklet of more than 600 pages contains notes on the music and texts, together with comments by Savall himself. [La Capella Reial de Catalunya] Founded by Savall together with Figueras, this vocal ensemble was the second of his groups after the instrumental ensemble Hespèrion XX. At its founding in 1987 it was known simply as Capella Reial, and after several changes of name it took its present title in 1990. Formed to research and disseminate choral music of the seventeenth century and earlier, it has brought a great deal of music from the medieval and Baroque periods to a wide audience. It is also active in reviving old folk repertoire from Catalonia, the Mediterranean and elsewhere in Europe, and this distinctive repertoire is a large part of its appeal.
