Description:
Thank you for your patience! We are thrilled to announce that we are finally back in stock with new releases from Testament, the legendary historical label whose distribution had been suspended for quite some time!! Tower Records is proud to be the first to bring these releases to our customers in Japan through our exclusive channels. Testament’s Karajan releases have long been highly acclaimed for their exceptional performances, excellent sound quality, rarity, and their role in preserving historical stories for the present day. This new release—a live recording from the 1970 Salzburg Festival—is another unmissable performance that offers multifaceted value. As a contemporary newspaper review noted, “On one hand, Mozart’s Concerto-Symphony, delicate as silver filigree; on the other, R. Strauss’s symphonic poem, a shining nugget of gold. The musical contrast between the two works was magnificent!” This disc stands as a complete album where the contrast between the two pieces truly shines. Both works have been performed frequently by the Berlin Philharmonic, and there are many recordings of *Thus Spoke Zarathustra* by Karajan in particular; however, due to the contrast with Mozart, this performance feels remarkably “contemporary” even now, more than 40 years after it was recorded. The *Express Wien* newspaper analyzed that the key factor was “the successful attempt to achieve an approach close to chamber music with an orchestra of over 100 musicians.” Regarding Mozart as well, while Karajan has EMI recordings, I believe you will appreciate the excellence of this live recording even when comparing the soloists. In this live performance, a “face-to-face” seating arrangement was adopted with a reduced orchestra, and the woodwind soloists were positioned in a bridge-like formation at the center. It is a performance that, rather than relying on French-style sophistication, is open and ornate yet characterized by a thorough pursuit of perfection. Indeed, the word “perfect” is fitting for both the soloists and the orchestra, and one can clearly hear how Karajan’s philosophy and interpretation are thoroughly instilled in every performer. In fact, Karajan handled a superhuman workload at this 1970 Salzburg Festival as well. Amid an extremely packed schedule—five performances of Verdi’s *Otello*, three of Mozart’s *Don Giovanni*, Verdi’s *Requiem*, and two concerts of orchestral works with the Berlin Philharmonic (including this recording)—one cannot help but be astonished that he presented works from such opposite ends of the spectrum with such perfection. This recording serves as a powerful reminder of Karajan’s greatness.
