The Jerusalem String Quartet, now one of the world's leading quartets, releases Shostakovich on the BIS label. The viola team has changed from Amihai Gross to Ori Kamm since 2011. Shostakovich was publicly attacked by the Soviet regime in the mid-1930s.He worked in this genre from 1938 until the end of his life, composing a total of 15 pieces. The Second No. 2, composed in 1944, is a dark, powerful, and sometimes dissonant work that is unmistakably Shostakovich, despite its elusive character and lack of direct reference to war; the Seventh, composed in 1959-60, is in three movements and dedicated to his first wife, Nina, who died in December 1954; and the Tenth, composed in 1964, is a work for string quartet in four movements and dedicated to the memory of his wife. Composed in 1964, No. 10 is one of the most famous works of Shostakovich's later years. In this period, Shostakovich's music is more quiet and melodic, appealing to the audience.
